So, I was recently doing my tax return and noticed that most of my income in the last financial year has come from a content analyst gig I’ve had since December 2019. And by “most”, I mean “all of my invoices bar one kill fee from an Australian publication”.
This to me says two things:
The People are being deprived of my invaluable input at this very delicate and volatile moment of time in the world.
I am horribly out of practice when it comes to writing.
This newsletter is a chance to change both of those things.
If you’re new to me, I (Albert Santos) am a pop culture writer and bad-opinion haver. I got into writing solely to terrorise the world with more bad takes on things like Black Mirror, the Justice League, food deserts, social inequality, and failed toy store chains. Despite nearly everyone’s better judgement, I have been published in Vice, Junkee, Pedestrian, SBS Voices, Crikey and Rolling Stone.
Once a week, I’ll be emailing you with my takes on the latest news, current events, pop culture happenings, and anything in between. Want to know what I think of the second season of The Boys or the Mulan live-action remake? Or what about the current state of Australian and international politics? What if you don’t really care and just want to see me fall flat on my face? That’ll all be covered in here.
Yes, this is a broad range of topics. That’s on purpose. I want to leave as much room as possible for this letter to grow and expand organically. How the Albertinho Letter looks in a year’s time may be completely different from how it starts. That’s a good thing! Or it might stay the same, which is also a good thing! Or it might be a random assortment of words that only my wife and I can actually decipher. That is a less-good thing, but still, progress!
If you are here because you signed up to my previous TinyLetter: Firstly, welcome back! Secondly, if you no longer want to receive my emails (reasonable) feel free to opt-out at the bottom of this email.
And that should cover most of everything! Issue One should hit your inboxes later this week. See you then!
— Albert
Will it include spoilers for Tv/Films I may not have got a chance to watch yet (ie. day 1 spoilers?)
